Carry Makeup in Style | Laura Mercier Custom Artist Portfolio Review

Laura Mercier Custom Artist Portfolio

Carrying makeup when I travel, especially when most of it is checked in, is never-wrecking for me! I am always always worrying about what would have smashed, spilled and slipped! I double pack, triple pack, put it horizontal, put it vertical, but some or the other mishap happens and I end up ruining my clothes! The answer to this is carrying makeup products which can hold shape, are not fragile, and come with a super sturdy packaging. I covered two of such “made-for-travel” things herebut other than these most of my stuff is pretty fragile and seeing them ruined breaks my heart!

Now a name like, Laura Mercier Custom Artist Portfolio might sound like a pro product not meant for ordinary folks, but thats not true! This expensive ($98) piece of clothing for beauty products is as much for a makeup enthusiast as for professionals! I got this last year during the holiday sale at Laura Mercier and have not been without it for any of my travels! It is compact, sturdy, sleek, and very spacious! This has taken all my makeup-breaking worries off my head and makes makeup organization very easy.

The portfolio comes in two sizes, Regular and Petite. It is usually listed as Limited Edition, but is brought back so many times that LE isn’t something that would describe its availability. I got the larger sized portfolio which is a double zipped case and opens completely on three sides as you can see in the image. It comes with four mesh pouches of different sizes and a middle detachable sleeve with one side for brushes and other side for palettes. The mesh pouches are detachable and are placed/attached in the portfolio with magnets.

Some versions of this portfolio also come with two empty compacts for keeping Laura Mercier eye shadows and blushes. With my Portfolio, I didn’t receive the empty compacts, instead I received quite a few of their makeup products including, a 6 filled eye shadow palette, lipgloss, eye shadow stick (fantastic stuff!) A cream blush and full size mascara.

On one side there are two equal sized pouches, I keep my eye products in one pouch and cheek/lip products in the second pouch.

The brush sleeve again is two sided. The brush holder side has a good number of slots for my brushes and the flap keeps the bristles from getting damaged. The other side of the sleeve is a large slot to keep any sort of makeup palettes. Sorry for the dirty brushes, I had packed this yesterday for a friends wedding makeup. She is a colleague and I wanted to do something nice for her so volunteered for doing her makeup! She was more than happy to have me and we had a great time :-)

The other side of the portfolio has two more pouches. One pouch is narrow and I keep eye pencils in it. The other is much larger than the other pouches and is big enough for bottles and skin care etc.

L to R: Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, Clinique All about eyes, Chanel moisturiser decanted, Nuxe Reve De Miel, MAC Pro Longwear concealer, Givenchy Le Rouge lipstick in Carmin Escarpin, MAC Dazzleglass in Girl’s Delight , YSL Touche Eclat #3, Chanel Pirate Rouge Allure lipstick, Becca Shimmer Skin Perfector in Moonstone.

This is an expensive purchase, but if you are one who invests in high end makeup or travels a lot this could be a life saver!

Thanks to the compact shape, it reduces the space occupied by makeup products in the luggage and fits snugly with the other stuff.

I bought the limited edition one for my trip to Thailand ( and I was in love with it! In each pocket I put different category of makeup and it made my life so much easier. The part where I am not too crazy about though is the lack of the handle. For some reason I prefer my makeup bag/case to have a handle so I can grab it more easily out of my luggage and/or carry it by itself. I don’t know about you but when I went on my trip, I really packed it in with so much makeup that the whole portfolio became super “chubby”!! Haha. That made it even more difficult to carry. I had to carry it between my arm and chest like I was carrying a stack of textbooks. LOL.

Oh you got the one with the snakeskin on! It wasn’t around when I got mine! :-( I know around my wedding I had stuffed it a lot and it got chubby like you said! But still compact and still help its shape! :-) Bags with handle are definitely more convenient, but I don’t think I would have liked THIS one with a handle though! :-)

I NEED THIS!!!! i flew 19 times last year. and i’m toning it down this year to a good 6 haha. so you can imagine that more than a few palettes have been cracked and i just need to keep the number of makeup related bags down to a minimum. but holy cow $98…. let’s see if the bf will buy it for my xmas gift 😛

Hey Jen! 😀 Rishi gifted this to me on Christmas too! People I guess, feel a lot more spendy on Christmas than any other time of the year! fingers crossed! 😀

Wow! This is deceptive! You would never think that would hold so much stuff! Amazing! I’m looking into this now… Not to mention the holder is gorgeous and sleek.

  8. kimmybeautyisles

So glad I found you (saw your comment on But First Coffee)! I was lusting after this so bad a couple of months ago, didn’t know it was still available.

Divya, 2 things- you did your friends wedding makeup…coolest thing ever…though wud have loved to c the pics as well:)
2nd- I totally loved this carrier…infact you know this time around only when I travelled, I ws thinking I need to get a better/sturdier makeup travel kit for my brushes/foundation/etc. (1 of my Bobbi brown LE eye shadow palette broke a little..super sad) BUT I am not sure about the price…this definitely looks super expensive gal…any dupes in this also wud really be helpful 😛

    • Divya

Ha ha! I know right? Wish I had pics to share.. Dupes I haven’t come across yet.. but you can check out locally if you find something which is sturdy!

  10. Julie

I just ordered this and it is being delivered tomorrow! I am so excited to play around with it and see what I can fit in it. I love how chic and sleek it is!

  11. Neeraj S Navare

This looks interesting and loved the way u got all ur products in one pouch. This is an amazing pouch but the price is really hefty. Btw I must say we have a lot of products in common and I use them for all my makeup jobs here in India. I loved the way u sorted ur products. I’ve to learn that yet. Lol. Lovely article.

    • Divya

Thanks Neeraj! This was definitely an expensive buy but I mulled over it for months before taking the plunge and glad I did! :-) Good to know some of my favorites are yours too! :-)

    • Divya

I know I worry about the same and not so much for foundation as for all my cleanser tubes and bottles and little pots Ouch! :-) This is an investment which you have to really asses your requirement before making! :-)

  12. Faiza

This is very very smart bag which can carry enough amount of makeup but i am feeling like woww that you have done your friend’s wedding makeup!! :-)

    • Divya

I know right?! I have always wanted to do that and she had so much confidence in me it was amazing! I had a lot f fun and actually did a great job! 😀 Saying it for myself! 😛

  14. Daphne

Ahhh!! i’ve been eyeing this since they brought it out last year but could never convince myself spending that much money on something I’d use a couple of times for a year. It does sound lovely and very professional when you pull it out, haha! xx
