The “No Foundation” Foundation | Guerlain Lingerie de Peau & Bourjois Happy Light

Guerlain's Lingerie de Peau Foundation review, Bourjois Happy Light Foundation review best budget foundation Indian skin tone
Have I told you guys enough times, that I hate foundation? No? I hate foundations! The heavy feel, thick texture and greasiness is something my skin and I cannot stand. I would rather go bare faced than wear a foundation which makes me feel congested and made up. With such a state of mind, it is a struggle for me to find something my skin can tolerate and NOT react badly to. Till last year I didn’t own any foundation except the Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick, which I’d use very rarely in spots, only for special events.

I came across this amazing foundation from Guerlain, which everyone was raving about at one point of time and adjectives like “second skin”, “breathable” and “light” were enough to give me a push! I tried it in store and loved it! It felt like nothing on the skin and disappeared leaving just a flawless glow behind!

A flaw with this otherwise flawless foundation, which I discovered later, was that it oxidized a little bit on the skin as the day progressed. Since I use a very light layer of it I don’t see much difference, but its definitely there. I am wearing it in the below picture.

The foundation has spf 20 which is a plus, but also means it might be prone to flash-backs. It is about medium coverage but can be built up to be nearly full on my skin. I never have a longevity issue with foundations as my skin is normal, and this stays on me the whole day without much fading.

Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Foundation

A big drawback of this foundation for me is that it transfers on to clothes a lot! I learnt this the hard way! You better make sure you get your exact match because blending it on the neck is not an option! This foundation has limited shade options, with very few “lighter” shades. I wear the shade #03, which gets a tad light for summer but perfect for colder months.

The Bourjois Happy Light Foundation, I find to be as good as the Lingerie de Peau if not better! It has the same light texture (lighter), does not feel made-up, blends very easily and stays put for the whole day! I usually apply this with my fingers and it vanishes on the skin as soon as I put it on and does not leave any residue, powdery or otherwise. My skin still feels “skin-like” and comfortable.

The Bourjois foundation has no spf, so can be worn at both day and night. I wear the shade #53 which is a bit dark, but matches my summer skin perfectly. As with most drugstore foundations the Bourjois Happy Light has limited shades, but they do have something for everyone, especially pale skin tones.

If you are looking for a more affordable alternative to the Guerlain offering, the Bourjois Happy Light is your guy and might I say, better than the original! I love both, but I find myself using the Bourjois one a lot more these day.

Guerlain’s Lingerie de Peau retails for $61 on Sephora and Nordstrom. It is available at Guerlain Counters for upwards of Rs3200 in India. The Bourjois Happy Light costs £11.99 (currently on sale at £9..50) at Asos and at various drugstores in India(Rs 1495) and US.

Have you tried either of these foundations? How has your experience been? Let me know your thoughts!

I hope it’s okay to post about the foundation I prefer. I used to use a mousse foundation (can’t remember the brand), blending with a sponge lightly dipped in water, but came to hate the feel on my face. Now I can happily recommend NYC Smooth & Natural Matte Powder Foundation in Urban Light. I have medium to dry skin and this isn’t drying at all. Because I have very fair skin I like to use a light hand and fluff brush. I use a cream concealer and set it with a mineral powder, then use the foundation, no primer. Easy to blend to the neck, but no spf. I’m very happy with it. I just hit pan on my fourth compact.

    • Divya

Thanks so much for the recommendation! :-) Although NYC makeup isn’t available to me yet ill keep it in mind to try it out when I can! Sounds like a great one to have if you dislike foundation! :-)

  5. Amalia Vetaki

My only problem with Guerlain Lingerie de Peau , is the amount of alcohol and the several fragrance chemicals that are present in the formula. They cause irritation and prevent an unequivocal recommendation.

    • Divya

Hey Amalia! I actually replied to your comment yesterday but it seems my reply got lost somewhere! Anyways, I agree on the chemical part in specially overdose of fragrances in most high end foundations, be it Guerlain or Chanel or YSL. I know a lot of people have sensitivity to fragrances and certain compounds, but I have not had such experience so far so cannot comment on it! I like the foundation for its feel on my skin and the overall appearance. And as it goes with everything, what works for one may not work for another, but that should not stop somebody to profess liking for a product! what do you think? :-)

OMG Lingerie De Peau – one of my most favourite foundations. Only very recently almost knocked off that spot by the Estee Lauder Double Wear Light . The Guerlain one is totally worth the price and then some:)

    • Divya

Hey Dee! I still have to try the EL one! I recently got my hands on another tinted moisturizer (after much lusting!) and LOVE it! will share soon!

      • howdoesdeedoit

Lol you have self control. The slightest bit of lusting and that TM would have been mine. Good for you!!im trying to be better :( I tried the EL TM around 10 years ago….it oxidized horribly on my skin so it was a no go. Curious what their new formula is like. I shall wait for your thoughts on it!

  8. Vanessa {Citron and Guavaberry)

I reeeeealy dislike wearing foundations too! And I hate how it’s often quite obvious that it’s on…well, depending on the foundation. I actually watched Goss’ video on foundation recommendations today and was contemplating on the Bobbi Brown stick because he said is practically invisible…but $$$ (how do you feel about it anyways?). I’ll definitely have to check out the Bourjois one then!

    • Divya

Hey Venessa! I reserve the Bobbi Brown foundation stick for travelling and don’t use it unless I am in a huge hurry! Its a heavy foundation pretty much full coverage but as he described, blends in really well! It feels a bit much to me in summer so wouldn’t advise that to oily skinned people! :-) Try the Bourjois one! you’ll love it! 😀

  9. Carolyn @ The Makeup Writeup

Hi Divya, thanks for the review! I’ve read so much about both foundations and really wish Guerlain’s color range would expand. I’m afraid they might not have a good match for NC30 :(. Your skin looks flawless though, so no wonder you rarely use foundations!

    • Divya

Hey Carolyn! Thanks for your comment! I know its such a pain that they don’t have enough shades! Such a big brand is expected to have a better range! Have you tried the Bourjois one?

      • Carolyn @ The Makeup Writeup

Hi Divya! I have not…I actually haven’t been able to easily find Bourjois lately, but I just found out that they are being sold at Urban Outfitters (a clothing store chain) in the US. Thanks for the tip that they are also available on ASOS! I’ve also heard really great things about their Healthy Mix foundation — have you tried that one too, Divya?

        • Divya

Hey Carolyn! I have actually.. I have both the Healthy Mix and Happy Light in #53, but I can say that I like Happy Light better.. somehow feels lighter and better on my skin, which I mentioned was normal..! Asos should be a good place to order this from right?

  11. Laarni

This brand is on my wish list! Though I haven’t gotten a chance to swatch their foundations in real life. What’s your shade on MAC formula?

    • Divya

Hey Laarni! sorry for the uber delayed reply! I am NC 40 in MAC foundations and #3 in Guerlain and #53 in Bourjois! :-) Hope that helps!

    • Divya

Hey Livia! Thank you so much for the comment! :-) Yeah you should definitely try Happy light! Its amazing and I am sure you’ll get a color match! :-)

  12. Neeraj S Navare

Nice article. To prevent oxidation use a silicone based mattifying primer like ysl matte touch and always use a transparent powder to set. I love my Tenue de perfection more than LDP.

    • Divya

Hey Neeraj! 😀 Thanks so much for the comment! And for the tip! I don’t have YSL but Ill try wearing it on top of Laura Mercier or Chanel that I have. I hate layering up products too much.. feel congested! Probably because I am still have a long way to go to get comfortable with makeup!
I need to try Tenuw de Perfection now! 😀

    • Divya

Hey Rae! I am beyond thrilled to see your comment! Have been following your blog for years!! 😀 Would love to know what your favorite foundations are.. and more so the “no Foundation” Foundations!
Thank you for the comment! :-)

      • Rae (@theNotice)

Oh my goodness! blushes Thank you so much, Divya — I’ve really been enjoying The Conscience Fund recently as well :)

Still on the hunt for a favourite foundation! So far, all of the formulas I’ve liked have either contained silicones (Make Up For Ever Face & Body) or didn’t come in a light enough shade (IT Cosmetics Celebration Foundation).

        • Divya

Thanks so much for your appreciation Rae! means a lot to me! 😀 I am grateful to my genes for not being overly sensitive to chemicals (except for probably SLS.. not sure) Can pretty much go with anything.. but yes heavy full coverage foundation are very stifling.. which is a no-no!

    • Divya

I haven’t tried Revlon’s.. I remember not liking their older formulation much! Happy Light is my jam for days when I need more coverage! :-)

  13. Jaa

I have a BB version of this and I like it! I have yet to try the foundation but it’s on my list! :)

I sooo want to try the Bourjois foundations. Have heard nothing but rave reviews about them. Do you know what drugstore in the US that sell them?

  14. Faiza

I like the cheaper option that will be my next purchase for a foundation….currently i am using the body shop extra virgin liquid foundation… which feels heavy on the skin but the glow it gives is very beautiful..

      • Faiza

Hi Divya! i am fine and hoping that you will also be doing great… have a nice Spain visit dear!
I was just little bit busy at home :-)

  15. Jae

The Guerlain foundation looks great on you! :) Too bad it transfers! That’s a bummer. I’m not fond of thick and heavy bases too so I stick to BB creams and foundations that are quite light and runny like Shiseido’s Perfect Refining Foundation. I suggest trying something like the Jouer tinted moisturizers too though!

    • Divya

Hey Jae! Funny you should mention Jouer because I just bought the Luminizing tint from CultBeauty after trying a hefty sample and absolutely loving it! :-) I like Dior BB cream a lot too! I am now thinking of mixing the two and using

  16. sylirael

I wish Guerlain made lighter/cooler foundations! I keep drifting past the counter and swatching, but it always looks like I have dipped myself in artificial orange cheese powder…I suppose it saves my wallet, LOL! Best luck I’ve had recently was NARS siberia, although I tried Giorgio Armani Maestro in the lightest shades in Dubai and was fairly impressed. The only problem was that I never really felt like it fully dried down…

Anyway, totally hear you on the ‘hate feeling like you’re wearing foundation’ thing! I have wonderful lightweight HG stuff from YSL, and even then I only wear it occasionally!

    • Divya

Hey Syl! I know there is a shade problem with Guerlain.. if I am #3, can only imagine how small a number would get their color match! which Nars one did you like? is it the Sheer glow? I have heard so much! I have a whole wishlist dedicated to Nars at the moment which I am unleashing in Spain! 😛

      • sylirael

The NARS was the cream compact in the lightest shade, Siberia. It felt really nice, too. I also tried a thin layer of Giorgio Armani Maestro in Dubai, in the lightest shade, and loved it except for the fact that it felt like it never really dried down all the way…odd!

  17. Kiss & Make-up

What a shame that the Guerlain one transfers on clothes. Hate that, especially in summer when I wear tops in pale colors or white… The Bourjois foundation sounds wonderful though.

    • Divya

Oh yeah I ruined a white shirt with that! 😐 Actually face and Body foundations are the best if you need to cover up your neck too without ruining collars! 😛

  18. parifantasy

Hey is this for oily skin or dry skin beauties can also try this.I am yet to come across any foundation like this which will give me feel of second skin.Bourjouis sounds great though..

    • Divya

Hey there! I am sorry I couldn’t mention the kind of skin it suits because mine is normal! But I think because it sets on the face may be dry-skinned girls will need something more hydrating.. especially with the Bourjois one.. the Lingerie de Peau is definitely suitable for dry skin!

  19. Tasha

I do love a light feeling foundation. I’ve actually never really tried a foundation that’s been thick, heavy or uncomfortable but I can imagine the struggle haha! I really want to try the Happy Light foundation though, it sounds lovely.

    Tasha // shiwashiful.

    • Divya

Hey Tasha! It really is lovely on the skin.. and the best part is in humid and hot weather it doesn’t make me sweaty or heavy on the skin! :-)

  20. Judith

I also dislike the feel of certain foundations, Lingerie de peau is unfortunately way too dark for me. If I end up buying a white foundation adjuster I might try it, because everybody seems to love it. Seems to be a great pick for dry skin.

I also like l’Oreal nude magique eau de teint that is very light and you can’t feel on the skin and make up for ever face and body. I heard that bourjois healthy mix serum is a great dupe for chanel vitalumiere aqua, but I haven’t tried it myself.

    • Divya

Hey Judith! Thanks for the comment! :-) I have the healthy mix foundation and its pretty good too! I actually didn’t like the Chanel Aqua foundations so if you ask me I don’t thing the Bourjois one is a dupe for it!
I haven’t tried the L’oreal one.. and MUFE Face and body didnt agree with my skin for some bizzare reason. Actually my favorite foundation is the MAC Face and Body.. no-fuss and beautiful! :-)

  21. Isobel Rose

I’ve always wanted to try the Happy Light foundation, but the lightest shade is too orange for my natural skin colour (sans Spanish tan) so I can’t! :( x

    • Divya

Hey Isobel! Thanks for the comment! :-) I though Happy Light’s lightest shade suit paler skin tones.. as a lot of people had raved about it previously! 😐 Its a really good foundation though! :-)

  22. kimmy59

Oh no, why did you remind me that I need to try this? It has been sitting in my Sephora wish list and I forgot about it, lol. Recently tested out Chanel’s Matte Velvet Foundation and it feels really light (to me anyway) and I love the coverage (medium). Have you tried that one?

    • Divya

Hey Kimmy! I did try that and didn’t like the powdery finish it gave! 😐 In fact I tried the Vitalumiere Aqua as well and found it heavy.. in fact I had those two in mind while writing this post.. and they are the ones which define what I most dislike in foundations! 😛 I know a lot of people are fans.. not me sorry! 😛

      • kimmy59

No need to be sorry, different foundations work for different people, of course. :) I will definitely let you know if I eventually try the Guerlain and what I think about it.

    • Divya

Hey Jasmin, thanks for the comment! I am actually wearing Guerlain’s in the picture, but both of them look identical on me so doesn’t matter! :-)

    • Divya

Hey Annie! ha ha I know the feeling! There are so many coming out every month, week year hows one supposed to keep track! It hardly ever happens that I repurchase a foundation.. there is always something new waiting to be explored! :-)

  23. peachesandcorals

Unfortunately bourjois and me don’t get along that well… However the guerlain foundations sounds good only. Have you tried chanel foundation they are really nice.

    • Divya

Hey Natalie! <3 I know theres so much out there that things get forgotten way before they get over! 😛 You should give this a try! Also the Jouer ones that Daphne suggested are brilliant too! I got the Luminizing moisture tint and its amazing stuff!

    • Divya

Hey Daphne! Thanks for your comment! :-) I actually just got hold of the Jouer luminizing moisture tint after trying a hefty sample I got in a Cult Beauty order! Its AMAZING! I love it to bits! Coming with me to Spain that one! 😀
I have considered getting a powder like Studio Fix etc.. but I don’t hate anything as much as a powdery face! I know it settles down.. but I don’t have the patience sadly! duh! 😛
