Too Pretty To Use

I have a section in my makeup drawer (which is rather large) as proof of just how badly “product hype” has hit my poor wallet! “Limited Edition” makes my bank account groan very loudly, but I shamelessly ignore it. I have a fair share of insanely expensive makeup and other bits which I know are going to go bad even before I get around to using them! Naming a particular beauty blogger as the reason for my unwarranted purchases is just wrong, so I won’t do it! I love what they do, I love reading about new stuff, but its upto me where I want to put my money. Now lets get on with the ramble!

One of my “too good to use” products was the über expensive, and an otherwise perfect Guerlain Wulong Meteorites Pressed Powder. If you were into makeup and had been reading beauty blogs around the end of 2012, then I am pretty sure this limited edition wonder from Guerlain would have caught your attention. I literally bought this with my eyes closed and absolutely no reason whatsoever. I just knew I had to have it no matter what! Well then I did get it, but have hardly used it since. The compact is beautiful and glass so its not something I could carry around and definitely needs a gorgeous dressing table to sit on!

I had also picked up a Guerlain Rouge G lipstick in 02 Gardenia, around the same time as the powder. Its a pretty pinky peachy nude that I bought the moment I swatched it! Now, the problem with this one is the same thing that makes it so luxurious, the packaging! Its just SO DAMN HEAVY and bulky that there is no way I can carry it around! It just sits on the table to be used, which never happens! Just look at the bullet! My perfect lipstick with no use Aaah!

$95 for a large bottle of the FAMOUS Josie Maran Argan Oil didn’t seem much to me during a Christmas shopping frenzy, but of course I have not used it enough to justify the spending! I have no idea what I was thinking when I bought it! May be “an elixir for perpetual youth and beauty”.. comes close! I find it too rich an oil for the face and too expensive for the hair. I am stuck!

Among the more recent purchases have been the Urban Decay Naked Palette. Do I even have to reiterate why I bought this? No I think! But what I do need to confess is that I have not used any of the colors even once! I have no idea whats wrong but I have never remembered to get this out for use. May be for my next makeup rotation this is definitely coming out!

The Chanel Poudre Signee de Chanel Illuminating Powder was another limited edition product which got hyped enough for me to splurge $$$ on. This one though I have started to include regularly in my makeup but only since last month. For a good one year this was lost in the depths of my makeup stash and nearly forgotten! This is a gorgeous one, never over the top and very very easy to use. You can see it in action here.

Tom Ford lipsticks are every lipstick lovers dream and well worth it! They are insanely expensive, but of course this didn’t stop the addict in me to buy one when I was in Paris. You can check out the rest of the haul here. I got the color Cherry Lush, which is still UNTOUCHED. I am waiting for it to be fall (in my head) to start using it, but I cannot promise ill have it in me to ruin that beautiful TF ruthlessly!

Of course there are a lot more things which should have been in that picture, but are not. Another time, another post may be.

I need to muster all the will power I can to start using these with nonchalance, before things start to fossilize!

What are your precious makeup bits that you have not made a dent in? Spill the beans!

These are all gorgeous, but you must bring yourself to ruthlessly use them! It’ll be fun! “May be “an elixir for perpetual youth and beauty”.. comes close!” – LOL! That does tend to entice a buy or 400. I too found the JM Argan Oil too rich for my face (I broke out badly when I tried mixing it into my normal night moisturizer). Being unwilling to let it go, I started adding drops of it into my body lotions and butters and it amped up the hydration and helped me use the rest of it up. Someone also suggested I could use it in the bath by adding a few drops into it! Good luck! Oh and may I suggest from the Naked palette: Sidecar on the lid, blended into the crease with a mix of Buck and Naked (ha!), a touch of Virgin on the brown bone, eyes lined with Darkhorse. It’s one of my Naked Palette No Fails! <3

Ergh, I know how you feel–there are still loads of products I haven’t used because THEY ARE SO PERFECT AND NEW. (Especially with the brand new flawless surfaces of cream blushes and lipsticks!) How about you dilute the argan oil with a lighter oil? Maybe mix argan + coconut/olive/jojoba and leave that in your hair?

On another note, I totes want a TF lipstick now

Sometimes I’m tempted not to use something to avoid running out as it’s LE, but I tell myself what you said, it’s going to go bad before I can even use it at this rate! I’ve gotten a lot better with the products I choose to buy and really think about what I would and wouldn’t wear, and I try not to get into the hype of something I’m sure I don’t need… On the other end I carefully look around when something is hyped up to see if it’s worth it and this way I’ve found some real gems! I refuse to buy something and not use it though. If I don’t use something gets gifted or sold! 😉 xx

I hear Wulong is nice as a finishing powder, if that helps! Although at least it has a nice, ornamental case to put on a vanity, and is a powder so probably won’t go off 😉
I’d just use up the argan oil on your hair, enjoy it while it lasts, and then maybe splurge again someday when you get the chance!
Also, you are super lucky for having that Chanel powder, and I hate you for it. 😀 But in a friendly, envious way.

After that totally unsolicited advice (sorry, LOL)… I don’t have much that’s really festering away in my stash (partly because my stash is comparatively tiny, and partially because makeup prices in NZ mean it’s harder to give into temptation and just get that $88 lipstick, heh!). I’m on a mission at the moment to use some things up though, because it makes me kind of antsy to even own ‘too much’ of Revlon priced stuff! If I had to pick something, it would definitely be eyeshadow palettes, because given the frequency with which I wear any substantial amount of eyeshadow, it will take me a lifetime to even make a reasonable go at one palette (say the Naked 2), hah! 😀

    • Divya

Oh Wulong is really nice but I don’t see much of a difference right now! 😛 May be when I am older it’ll do the “airbrush” thing on me? 😉 I am so bad at using eye shadows.. nothing has ever hit pan!! Nothing! 😛

I can TOTALLY relate – though I don’t even buy the really expensive brands like Guerlain, Chanel and Tom Ford. Whenever I order from Sephora though, it takes me at least a month to try anything because I don’t want to dip into the fresh new products!

  11. Rae (@theNotice)

These are gorgeous picks, Divya! I can totally see why they’re too pretty to use. But you HAVE to use that Tom Ford lipstick this fall, okay? It’s going to look so amazing on you!

  12. krupa

Well I guess for me MAC is the most expensive brand I have tried till now and so I have a MAC skinlighter that I keep staring at and not using.

  13. Michelle

I have not touched my Urban Decay Naked palette enough either! I keep thinking it’s because my skin tone/colouring would suit the Naked 2 better… Alas, it sits tucked away in my drawers. Those Guerlian products look so luxurious, I’d have a hard time ruining their perfect condition too! I’ve always wanted to try Tom Ford’s Wild Ginger but hesitate because it’s such an out there/bright colour. x

    • Divya

Oh thank God there is someone on the same boat as me!! 😛 Wild Ginger was definitely too orange for me.. I like blue based reds more retro more chic anyways :-)

  14. jenn f

!!! welp seeing as how the UD palette is probably one of the better priced items in this lot, you had better use it Divya! hahaah, and once you do, you’ll never go back trust me.
i’m like that too!!! i have a nars palette i sitll haven’t used. a guerlain bronzer, never touched (as too scared b/c…bronzer is scary) more than a few lipsticks ….so ashamed.

    • Divya

I definitely have to use it now!! Thats a clear favorite! and the reason I bought it! 😛 You need to show the Guerlain bronzer some love!

  15. Rachel R.

Don’t we all have something like that. I grew up poor, and I always have remind myself that saving for that “special occasion” wastes the money I spent, rather than saves it. Still, I cant bring myself to wear my Opium perfume except on special occasions. I also have a Bobbi Brown eyeshadow palette I haven’t used yet. My 23rd anniversary is coming up, and I swear I’m going to use both!

    • Divya

Hey Rachel! I agree with you completely. I keep telling myself this now, need to use things in order to justify the price I have paid! Congratulations on your anniversary! :-)

  16. Sunny

Haha my philosophy is if you buy them, USE THEM! My Poudre Signee de Chanel has lost most of its pattern, but dang I swear that thing is prettier on the cheek than in pan! You won’t regret using it!

drooool sighs droooool sighs (and so it continues).
What can I say? If it makes you feel any better – Aren’t we all guilty of hoarding? I have to dig into all those glosses and lipsticks and eye pencils that have not seen the light of day and put them to good use :-). You inspire me to get started :D!

    • Divya

Ha ha! Vidya the purpose of this post not to make you drool but to remind you to use whatever has been hoarded already! 😛 Please don’t let this make you buy any of this crazy expensive stuff!! 😛

      • Vidya

No no not at all! You have actually inspired me to invest my money wisely and use the stash that I have though honestly it mostly consists of drug store brands like Lakme, Maybelline, Colorbar, etc. The only high-end (in my eyes :-P) purchase I ever indulged in was a Lancome pressed powder refill (its cheaper than buying it in those chic packages that they come in) that I bought at the Mumbai Duty Free airport that I got at a whopping 70% off :D. Been using it diligently because I think it is high-time I did and I am not sure whether the expiry date is close or has already gone whooshing past but thankfully no damage to my skin so far ;-)!

        • Divya

Oh thats awesome Vidya!! Refills are seriously the wise thing to buy unless you buy stuff only for their packaging! 😛 I really liked the Chanel pressed powder I tried today.. but I wont be buying it anytime soon as winters means my skin is dry so I won’t be touching powders! :-)

  18. Sofia

That Guerlain meoteorites compact does look beautiful indeed!
I have way too much make up, especially in the eyeshadow and blush departments… this is the reason why I’ve never bought products like the Urban Decay naked pallettes and never will… but then, I don’t have a beauty blog 😉

  19. gracepersonified

This post comes as a reminder to all of us hoarder/addicts 😛 I’ve started trying to use my much hyped purchases in a routine manner in order to justify the moolah spent on them but it doesn’t come easy!

  20. wondersreviews

Omg the UD palette ! Send to me i’ll use it <3.
The Chanel is a gorgeous one.
I was luck to get a 50% Sun in the city highlighter from Guerlain this summer ! I'm not sure i'll be able to use it ! It's too gorgeous!
Thans's why i résisted to buy the CHANEL lace lighlighter.
You should use lipsticks as soon as possible ! They turn much more quickly than other stuffs. You'll regret when they'll turn and smell chemical.
I have a Guerlain bullet bought the year it came out, it turned. I kept it to remember me to not buy it again, unless i want to use the color every day.
    Xoxo

Gorgeous products! The embossing on the Chanel powder is stunning, I don’t think I could bear to use it either! While the Guerlain lipstick packagin sounds soooo luxurious, I can understand why its weight would be so annoying!

    Tasha // shiwashiful.

    • Divya

Yeah the Chanel embossing was beautiful, but I think I have made dents now.. anyways the product is gorgeous and I am happy I got it! Cannot stop using it now! :-)

  22. jasmincharlotte

Ohh they look so pretty! I love my naked palette and use it all the time so I do recommend getting that out! I seem to but lipsticks and never use them – have a few lovely bobby brown ones sitting waiting to be used! X
