Its a bit of a struggle for me to pack beauty products for air travel since there is no telling what havoc air pressure will cause inside makeup pouches. I have spent many stressful hours air bound, worrying about some compact going bust or some tube happily soiling my white shirt while I may be sipping on my orange juice unbeknownst. To avoid post flying distress, I either carry nothing or some (or all) of these products for the benefit of my clothes and also the peace of mind of my travel partner.
While my rather long overdue holiday is still about a month away, I am sure a lot of people are either already on their’s or leaving pretty soon so I thought I’ll spill the beans on products which have traveled far and wide with me and have so far proved robustness against any transit hazard.
I once made a mistake of carrying my Laura Mercier’s Portfolio stuffed with makeup, (and ended up using only two things), owing to which I had very little space left in my tiny suitcase for new stuff. Lesson learnt, when going to Paris DO NOT carry any makeup on yourself! Obviously, chunky foundation bottles or large mirrored eyeshadow palettes almost never figure on my list of things to pack, but the same cannot be said for blushes. I always pack more than I need.
Multi-use products are a no-brainer, space saver and plain genius! BB cremes and stick concealers have zero chances of spillage (if packaged well) and my absolute favorites are the Dior BB Creme and Bobbi Brown’s Foundation Stick. Dior, which has the best kind of packaging, a tube and a pump, is made of thick plastic so there is very little chance that air pressure can burst it open (hasn’t happened so far) and the pump dispenser means that unless its pressed no liquid is going to leak through it. Usually with squeeze tubes the story is slightly different and messier!
Another favorite travel buddy is Bobbi Brown’s Foundation Stick which being solid and twist up is pretty much a lazy careless person’s dream come true! It comes in a twist up stick that tightly shuts so I can rest assured that however much the mercury rises or falls, I am not going to find makeup goop in my bag (or on clothes). Also, which such products the -100ml- restriction doesn’t apply. Score!
Speaking of twist-ups, there is no way I can be convinced to carry an eye or lip pencil aaand a sharpener to go with it. Sharpening pencils is my least favorite activity on holiday. The next best thing? Carry more twist up pencils! Clinique’s Chubby Stick Intense for lips is a matte creamy hydrating opaque formula which for once my lips can tolerate. I love the pinky nude Curviest Caramel. I don’t have as many twist up eye pencils as I would have liked and the only one, Chanel’s Espresso, which I love for both the color (caramel brown) and formula (creamy pigmented) comes along for every trip, long or short. No sharpener, no mess!
Chanel’s Destiny is my answer when makeup bag real estate is in shortage and I have to choose between a blush or bronzer (the hardships). This is the epitome of blonzers and I bring it along every single time! Its imperative to have some sort of mirror/compact on me on the go. A lucky purchase, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder Palette, comes with three different hues of powders and a rather generously sized mirror which ensures that I can see my face even if the hotel forgets to install mirrors!
“Airplane beauty routine” was something I would roll my eyes at, but after a few tragic episodes of super dried up skin with major breakouts, I have learnt to carry a hand sanitizer and a thick moisturiser along! What has also gotten into my head is the lack of tolerance for my otherwise normal-ish under eye area which becomes an obvious shade of green-blue after a few hours on the plane. YSL’s Touche Éclat does not require a crew of brushes or skills to work and temporarily hides any unwanted shadows on the face. One of those princess products which otherwise hardly have use!
I know I said no eyeshadow but on some days on holiday there might be A) time on hand or B) a fancy place to go to, in which case a little something on the eyes can makeup me look pretty fancy (or pretty and fancy)! By Terry’s Ombre Blackstar in Bronze Moon is a genius formula, super pigmented, rock solid budge proof and an extremely flattering bronze gold! It is quite shimmery and bold so is definitely reserved for “fancy occasion only” but since it comes in a lightweight twist up pencil packaging and practically takes no space in the bag, it would be foolish not to carry it along! No brushes or primers needed, by the way.
My new favorite thing in the world is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel which I am super excited to carry along come the time. Doomed with seriously long eyebrow hairs which can rival the wildest bed-head, I need something as heavy duty as this to ensure no-one sees the wilderness on my face!
Thats about makeup. I have my favorite skincare bits in another post on the way!
